Enhypen Concert Review

ENHYPEN knows how to put on a show. No matter how many times you have seen them or if you’re seeing them for the first time, your experience will be one that sticks with you for a lifetime. Not that they needed it with the scalding hot temperatures outside of the arena, but the crowd at United Center was warmed up with a fiery introductory performance of “Brought The Heat Back,” a promoted B-side that the crowd in the Chicagoland area had yet to witness live. The first note of BTHB was met with roaring cheers from fans, and didn’t seem to end as ENHYPEN quickly transitioned into their most popularly streamed song “Fever". (Video below)

One of the most exciting aspects of the evening was that I received the opportunity to bring my father along for this concert, as my co-host Em was getting the opportunity to experience her first VIP sendoff event. Having never been to a k-pop show before or knowing much about k-pop, I wanted to get a fresh perspective on ENHYPEN’s concert from his point of view. He was definitely unfamiliar with the structure of the show, but he seemed to be having a great time just being there with me. “What I like about these guys is that they can DANCE,” says my dad during “Fever”. He then goes on to say, specifically during “ParadoXXX Invasion”, that when he was around 17 he wanted to be a dancer. He had listened to music and danced in school, but it never turned into anything more than a hobby. He loved ENHYPEN’s energy and the way the crowd moved with them to every song. Now you may be thinking, If your dad has never been to a k-pop show, why ENHYPEN?

For context: the way my dad and I communicate is by sending each other TikToks & gifs basically every day to check-in. One day, I opened a TikTok from him and it was a Sunghoon fan edit… The timing couldn’t have been more perfect when I had the opportunity of reviewing the show that it would only make sense to take him as my +1. You can’t write this stuff. The stars simply aligned for us. We were both surprised during “ParadoXXX Invasion” specifically. ENHYPEN performed a special, live rock version of it. Me, having heard the song countless times and my dad, having only heard it once before, were blown away by this rendition.

One of the best parts about an ENHYPEN concert, and what they do so consistently well, is creating an environment based on the songs they’re performing through digital atmosphere. For example, during “Fatal Trouble”, the screens had a mirror effect on display which highlights and accentuates the meaning of the song’s lyrics… reflecting on your feelings, navigating confusion, not recognizing yourself. This moment in particular made me a little emotional, as I realized how quickly ENHYPEN has grown, and how the scale of their fame has changed over the past few years. As always, “Go Big or Go Home” was one of the most exciting and exhilarating parts of the concert, as it incorporates a fan-led chant of ENHYPEN’s members’ names in its dance break bridge. In addition to setlist staples, there were some songs that I and so many others were hearing for the first time. Two of those songs that will probably stick with me forever, are “Teeth” and “Moonstruck”. I remember when both “MEMORABILIA” and “ROMANCE: UNTOLD” came out, the albums that respectively house those songs, and I couldn’t help but hope that they would one day perform them live and I would be there. Mission accomplished!

However, I do wish this show felt a bit less rehearsed, as it felt there was no room for spontaneity. If you’ve never been to a k-pop show, members often have “ments” in between a couple songs to talk to the crowd, rest, and sip on water. Even these portions felt a little forced and over-scripted compared to previous performances, which left me feeling a little disengaged. I still have a lot of love for this group, don't get me wrong. ENHYPEN works famously hard to put on a show for their fans and have basically been touring nonstop for three years straight. Just like any human being— they need rest and sometimes can’t give 100% of their social battery. It’s very possible this tour adapted to their current stamina levels and need for resting points. Of course, the ments and fan interactions are only a small part of the show, and the members still constantly strive to leave you with a lasting experience beyond stunning live vocals and perfectly synchronized choreography.

Overall, seeing ENHYPEN perform just doesn’t get old. Even at three times, I had an incredible time and I know my dad’s experience seeing them for the first time was great, too. While their U.S. leg of the “WALK THE LINE” world tour has come to an end, I can only hope if you get the chance to see ENHYPEN, you do not hesitate on taking the opportunity.

You can hear more about my experience and Em’s in the “ateez, lolla, and enha oh my!” podcast episode slated to come out later this week (8/22).
